I work using cut and torn paper, usually from magazines, but also from scraps of wrapping paper, newspaper, catalogues, packaging, and junkmail - in fact anything from the deluge of paper with which we're daily assaulted. I sometimes include fabric, lettraset, and paper images manipulated in Photoshop.
The materials I use to make up my pictures are very much “found” or “lighted upon” in the spirit of Kurt Schwitters and Robert Rauschenberg.
A large part of what I make using this technique are portraits, mostly by commission. I like the idea that something as formal and prescribed as a portrait can be rendered with such disparate and random elements.
